Groombridge Road

A contemporary extension and renovation opens up views and floods natural light into a family home in Hackney.

The full renovation of this characterful five storey Victorian property celebrates its historic setting within the Victoria Park Conservation Area in Hackney, whilst creating an elegant modern home for a family. The redesign enhanced the connection between the interior and its charming environment, through carefully controlled glazed additions to the ground and first floor.

Careful consideration has been taken to balance the contemporary elements with the original Victorian character of the property. Earthy materials bring warmth to the minimalistic internal spaces, contrasted with reclaimed materials used to restore and enhance the historic character of the property.

The reconfiguration of the ground floor provides a sleek modern open-plan family dining space, whilst also incorporates more intimate spaces such as the snug and window seat nook. The new high performance brick extension with Crittall glazing provides a light-filled living space and highlights connection to the rear garden, bringing the outside in.

The primary concept of this project was to celebrate the property’s spectacular location within the Victoria Park Conservation Area. The picture windows across the ground and first floor were carefully designed to frame views towards the green spaces beyond.

“It was magical seeing our initial design. It was everything that we were trying to get to, but probably didn't have the design language to explain.”
