Greenwich House

Standing adjacent to the 17th Century Grade II Listed Macartney House, this detached cottage on the edge of Greenwich Park was in a state of neglect and disrepair at the start of its journey. The project demanded a humble and sympathetic approach to restoring the heritage value of the property, whilst establishing a reformed layout that was suitable for contemporary family life.

An intrinsic focus on preserving the original character of the cottage meant re-instating the existing panelling in the double-height atrium at the heart of the property. This was carefully restored across two storeys and conceals additional storage and access points to auxiliary accommodation including the new basement below.

Despite the parameters presented by its listed nature, the property was completely upgraded thermally, and the building is now heated by an energy efficient underfloor heating system throughout. Despite the listing of the property being so sensitive, our thorough planning application resulted in gaining approval for planning and listed building consent for a new basement level. A meticulous analysis of the existing windows contributed to the approval for slimline double glazing throughout, which will significantly reduce energy costs for our clients.

Carefully sculpted lightwells and rooflights were fundamental in ensuring the new reconfigurations were bathed in natural daylight. The renovation has polished this unassuming hidden gem to provide a family home that will continue to stand the test of time.
