Astrain Scheldt have recently moved to a new office in the historic heart of Spitalfields and Brick Lane. After a month in the new space we have found the area to be a constant source of inspiration for our practice, with its eclectic mix of old and new architecture and vibrant creative history.
The Townhouse, Fournier Street
Renowned for its vibrant arts and cultural scene the area surrounding Spitalfields and Brick Lane is a significant hub for innovation and heritage. Our new office is located within the Brick Lane and Fournier Street Conservation Area which features a remarkable array of Georgian architecture, which has historically attracted all manner of artists, artisans, and innovators.
The neighbourhood has long been an area of diverse culture and creative industries. Beginning with the arrival of Huguenot refugees during the 16th century which established the area as the centre of London’s silk weaving industry.
Fournier Street
Loft dormers with large amounts of glazing were built for silk-weavers to make use of the best light for the looms.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Spitalfields became home to many other ethnicities and cultures from Irish, Jewish and Bangladeshi communities. As a result, the area is a patchwork of cultures reflected in its eclectic architecture which acts as a canvas for creative expression.
The conservation area not only preserves architectural heritage but also promotes ongoing artistic dialogue through community events and exhibitions, making it a vital part of London's creative landscape.
The images below highlight just a few of the beautiful buildings that surround our new office.
Many of these Hugenot dormers can still be seen in the area today.
There has been a regular market at the Spitalfields site for over 350 years.
